A 12-year-old girl has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder after Boulder County sheriff’s investigators allege she reacted to having her iPhone taken away by twice trying to poison her mother with bleach.

The girl, who has not been identified, is being held at the Boulder County Juvenile Center. According to sheriff’s Cmdr. Heidi Prentup, a family member drove the girl to juvenile detention on Friday.

Prentup said the girl’s first attempt came on March 2, when she poured bleach into a breakfast smoothie her mother was drinking.

“Mom noticed an odor of bleach in the drink and thought her daughter had cleaned the glass prior to making the beverage and did not rinse all the bleach out,” Prentup wrote in a news release issued Friday afternoon.

The March 2 incident “left her mother feeling ill,” according to the release.

Four days later, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Boulder Community Health to investigate an assault they later learned stemmed from a second alleged attack by the 12-year-old. Prentup said the girl poured bleach into a water carafe in her mother’s bedroom.

“On the second occasion, mom noticed the odor of bleach in her water and confronted her daughter,” Prentup wrote. “This is when she learned her daughter had developed a plan to kill her for taking away her iPhone.”

According to Prentup, the mom deduced that the attempted poisonings stemmed from the iPhone being confiscated “through a conversation with her daughter.” She would not elaborate.
